Independent travel training
Independent travel training helps young people learn how to travel safely on their own.
Being able to access public transport helps young people make their own decisions about how they live and gives them access different opportunities.
They'll be able to develop life skills, build their self-confidence and have the freedom to meet up with friends or just get out and about.
Who can do the training
Our independent travel training is available for young people:
- aged between 10 and 25
- currently accessing supported transport arrangements to help meet aims outlined in their Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan
- whose first EHC plan names a school out of their local area and they qualify for travel support
How the training works
You'll be paired with one of our trainers, who'll give you support that's personal to you.
They'll look at the routes you want to take and work out safe ways for you to do this.
They'll help you learn about things such as:
- safe road crossing
- planning journeys
- staying safe
- using money, Oyster Card and tickets to pay for journeys
- time management
- what to do if something goes wrong or it's an emergency
The trainer will do all the journeys with you at first, then you'll gradually do more on your own until you feel confident to travel independently.
