Identifying SEND in the early years
All children develop at different rates in their early years. If you are worried about your child’s development, there are people you can speak to for advice:
- if your child attends nursery, speak to the staff or special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO)
- contact your health visitor or GP
- your local Children's Centre and Family Hub can offer advice and support
- Best start for baby is a service for all parents and carers from pregnancy until your child is 2 years old
- if you're worried about your child’s hearing, contact your GP. They can make a referral to see a specialist at a children's hearing services
- for communication concerns, there's language and communication advice
Progress check at age 2
At around 2 years of age, your child will have a 2 year old development review with a health visitor to review how they're growing, learning and developing. Children who attend an early years setting or a childminder will have an additional progress check at the same age. Learn about what to expect in the early years in this parents guide.
If there are concerns about a child’s development during the progress check, the SENCO will develop a plan in partnership with parents and carers. The plan could include:
- support provided by the setting to help a child reach agreed targets
- ideas, tips and activities to try at home
- referrals to health professionals or outreach support services, such as the Early Years Inclusion Team
